More on living Buddhism

As I mentioned in one of my posts yesterday, I am thinking of trying to add some elements of the Buddhist monastic lifestyle into my own life. I didn't really mention what specifically I would be trying to do, so I'm going to do that now. On the one hand, it will give people a better idea of what I'm considering and on the other hand it will help me figure out how feasible it actually is. My main concern is the fact that monastics spend most of their day in meditation which is something that I would not be able to do and therefore I'd have to structure my day a little differently. Also, I have work, school and studying that I need to do which further takes away from meditation time and (I'm assuming) requires more energy (i.e. - food, rest). So this is what I'd like to try out, ideally:

3:30 - wake up/shower/dress
4:00-7:00 - meditation (sitting/walking/yoga)
7:00-7:30 - breakfast
7:30-8:30 - commute to work
8:30-11:00 (approx) - work (interspersed with meditation, reading, schoolwork)
11:00-11:45(approx) - lunch
12:45-4:30 - work
4:30-10:00 (approx) - commute home/class/hang out with friends/meditation
10:00-11:00 (approx) - meditation
11:00 - sleep

In a nutshell, I'll be waking up very early and eating two meals a day. After noon I will only be consuming liquids such as tea. I will be spending a good amount of time doing meditation in the morning and also in the evenings when I don't have other obligations (such as class). I will not be attempting the vegetarian lifestyle at this point because I feel that I will need the meat protein in order to keep my energy levels up, however, this might change. If I find that I'm having too much trouble focusing throughout the day I will change the schedule around to start at 5:00 instead of 3:30 (as seems to be standard for Tibetan monasteries). I'm basing this schedule on the schedule that I've seen for certain monastic orders including Vietnamese and Thai.

I also plan on keeping a journal of my activities and feelings which I will share on here. I think I'm going to start with just having the two meals today and see how it works for me.

So far today, I'm finding myself feeling more alert myself. I'm a bit tired but not mentally like I usually am. It's definitely a welcomed change!
